Image looking toward the front entrance of the five story building with trolley cars in front, which was built between 1869 and 1880 at a cost of 8.5 million dollars (1880). It was built in the 'Second Empire' style. Known as 'Mullett's Monstrosity' it was torn down in 1939 and City Hall Park was expanded to include the lot. It housed the city's main post office and federal offices. Unfortunately the loading docks faced City Hall. Evidence of being folded in half, though it doesn't effect the image.. Book. circa.1880s. "Public Buildings in New York City and vicinity. No. 8065-6-7". Stereograph on orange board (3 1/2 x 7 inch) with label and description pasted on the back. Image of the front 'Head House' of the first train station built on this site in New York City. This three story structure existed between 1871 and 1899 and covered four acres. It cost 4.5 million dollars when built and served three railway companies at 42d Street and 4th Avenue - New York Central and Hudson River Railroad; New York and Harlem Railroad; and the New York and New Haven Railroad. When built it was the largest train depot in the world. Among its innovations were a central station concept, elevated platforms to the level of the passenger cars, and a train roof as a shed with clear spans over all the tracks. In 1899 the New York Central Railroad demolished the Head House and built a six story structure which existed for fourteen years before the railway built the present Grand Central Station with two levels of train tracks and a grander station to rival Penn Central which was completed in 1910. Plant at a cost of two and a half million dollars during 1888-1891, it covers a total of six acres. Built in the 'Moorish Revival' style it was among the first major buildings built using steel reinforced poured concrete in the United States. It was the first structure to have an elevator, electric lights, and telephone in Florida. The large structure sat in the middle of a 150 acre park which had 21 structures, a golf course, racetrack, and casino. Closed in 1930 it was transformed into the University of Tampa in 1933 which is still there now. Tours of the hotel are available to the general public. Fine clean copy.. Book. One man is seated on a floor mat looking dazed with another man laying down smoking opium with clothing hanging from the ceiling. Very uncommon picture of an opium den. Original Stereocard Photograph. "American Scenery, Boston, Washington Elm, Cambridge."

circa.1870s. Stereograph on yellow board with curved corners (6 7/8 x 3 1/2 inch). Title underlined on the backside of the board listing stereocards for "Boston and Vicinity". The image shows the lower part of the Elm tree with a iron gate around the base and a granite marker stating "Under This Tree Washington First Took Command of the American Army July 31 1775" which was said to be based on a Henry Wadsworth Longfellow quote. This legend become popular in the 1830s, though not true and was finally debunked in 1925. The tree fell in 1923 (aged 210 years) and was cut up into one thousand pieces and sold to the public and given to historical societies in all 48 states.
