Steel Engraving Portrait. "George Dewey"

Engraving circa 1900s (3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inch) of George Dewey (1837-1917) from Vermont in naval uniform. Attended the Naval Academy in 1854, served in the Mediterranean on the steam-frigate "Wabash". With the outbreak of the Civil War Dewey served under Farragut on the Mississippi, slowly moving up the officer latter Dewey served in the North Atlantic blockade. Became a commander in 1872, 1884 a captain while in the Asiatic fleet, 1889 a commodore while serving both on land and sea. While stationed in the far east the Spanish-American War broke out in 1898 and Dewey, in command of nine vessels lead by the "Olympia", sailed for Manila where and defeated the Spanish fleet loosing only 9 men to wounds. Holding the port and warning off the German fleet Dewey held the Philippines till the arrival of American troops which began the bloody guerrilla war which lasted till 1906. Dewey was made an admiral in 1899 and he made his triumphal return to the U.S. by way of Hong Kong in the "Olympia". Probably the most famous naval commander in American History besides John Paul Jones and Nimitz of WWII.. Book. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
