Bradbury and Evans. London. 1848. First edition, early issue. Bound in half green calf gilt, marbled boards. Boards rubbed as are extremities of boards. xvi, 624 pages. Engraved frontis., vignette title and 38 plates by Hablot K. Browne, all very badly foxed. Apart from these faults a sound copy. Early edition points are as follows. No page listed for frontis. and no quotes on "The Party" on plate listing page, Page 27 "fidgetty" at line 11 with "if" omitted from line 9 on p. 426 and Cuttle's left arm a hook on title page and plate on p239, "delight" instead of "joy" on page 284 5th line from bottom. ain't has no apostrophe on page 14 on the 10th line up from the bottom, shew and shewed on page 40 instead of show, no full stop at end of last line on page 582. Not first issue as has "Captain" not "capatan" on the last line of page 324 and page 431 is numbered.

Secure binding with a moderately rubbed cover, few tiny nicks to the extremities, and clean pages with negligible foxing.  Original owner cursive names at the front/rear endpaper. Full-page illustrations. This is Volume I (only). Rare! According to Wikipedia, George Palmer Putnam dissolved his publishing relationship with John Wiley in 1848. The Preface page to this book has a date of Twenty-fourth March, 1848, so it must have been shortly after if this was the case?  About 7-3/8 x 5 with 485 pages.. Book.
