JOHN LE CARRÉ.
The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. A novel. (SIGNED)
Imprint: Coward-McCann Inc., New York, 1963
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed by Author(s)
The Book Club issue of the first American edition. 8vo. 256pp. Quarter black cloth with grey sides, lettered in gold at the spine and with the author's facsimile signature gold-stamped to the base of the upper board (the correct first edition binding is red backstrip cloth, not black). Publisher's orange top edge stain, very slightly faded. A narrow trace of light toning to the free endpapers and a little light spotting to the fore edge. Retail price sticker to the tip of the front free endpaper (which I have not attempted to remove). A very good copy in the later state Book Club issue dust wrapper, repeating the original design, but with four quotes to the rear panel instead of three, no price printed to the head of the front flap, but the base of the flap clipped (where the original Book Club identifier should be found). Rear flap printed in black instead of black and red, and here omitting the imprint details. A very good copy of the Book Club issue of the first American edition - not in itself uncommon and particularly desirable, but this copy considerably enhanced by the presence of a title-specific bookplate signed by the author and pasted to the front free endpaper. The author's third novel, winner of multiple awards including the 1963 Gold Dagger, the 1965 Edgar Award, and the 2005 'Dagger of Daggers'.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover. Jacket: Very Good

Imprint: LONDON.GOLLANCZ,1963.
Edition: UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Not SIGNED.
UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,1st issue. NFINE/NFINE. No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip to dw/dj. Red,black and white colour dw/dj with an almost immaculate fresh, bright upper wrap with only the slightest hint of sunning/fading to spine/ backstrip - of which this particular dw/dj is notoriously prone to and known for.The rear white panel is very lightly marked with an ageing shadow affecting the top and spine/ backstrip edge, from the proximity of a 12mo book. There are no nicks or tears to any of the dw/dj edges and the merest hint of creasing to both top and bottom of the spine/backstrip.Top+
fore-edges have slight dust-soiling and some light ageing/darkening; contents bright, tight and clean.Publisher's bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,original,plain blue cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt letters to spine/ backstrip and near immaculate plain white unblemished endpapers. An exceptional copy with an even more exceptional dw/dj.Author died 12 December, 2020.
Recently voted 'the greatest spy novel of all time'.Since first being published,1963,'The Spy Who Came In From the Cold' has bowled over critics and readers alike with its unrivalled storytelling and fresh, morally ambiguous perspective onto the "practitioners" of the Cold War.Since then too,it has won a plethora of international accolades, reflecting its crucial role within our (UK) literary tradition and our social history.British Crime Writers Association 1963 Gold Dagger Award,1965 Edgar Award,"Dagger of Daggers," award,a one-time only award, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Dagger Awards,2005.A splendid copy of this Edgar Award-winning novel that was the basis for the Martin Ritt film featuring Richard Burton,as British secret agent Alec Leamas,Claire Bloom, and Oskar Werner.

Imprint: LONDON.HODDER & STOUGHTON LIMITED,1994.
Edition: UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn thus.
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Not SIGNED.
UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn thus.[These 2 titles were originally published in UK,by Gollancz,1963 and Heinemann,1965 respectively. This is the first complete, unabridged one-volume edn.] NFINE/NFINE.No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip to dw/dj - absence of publisher's price. This is believed to indicate an export edn, which usually precedes the UK trade edn issue/distribution. Bright, crisp, glossy laminated, dark blue background with dark blue+white silhouette illustration on upper panel along with both gilt and white letters,b/w author portrait photographic rear panel with white lettering; with negligible shelf-wear and creasing to edges and corners - no nicks or tears present. Both head+foot of spine/backstrip minimally bumped with reciprocal creasing. Top+fore-edges both aged/toned -as usual/normal with this issue - contents bright tight and clean, with the inevitable page-edge toning,no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners.Dw/dj design repeated to bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered, glossy boards, bright immaculate plain white endpapers.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,9-224pp [paginated] includes the 2 complete, unabridged novels comprising 26 and 23 chapters respectively; plus [unpaginated] publisher advert to recto of first page, title page, contents list/table,1st novel's title page,2nd novel's title page,a dedication, author's note, contents list/table,Pts 1-3 separator pages and 10pp blanks at rear.
These two Cold War novels, born out of the creation of the Berlin Wall, complement each other ironically,by encapsulating a soured brilliance that never was and the muddled, inward-gazing reality of British Intelligence.
