Theo Sinclair,a university lecturer,is approached one day in 1964 by a stranger, a girl called Alice. She is American, blonde
and very persistent. She wants to be told about her Daddy.Daddy,it emerges, was hanged for murder in 1945.He was Duke Donovan,a US serviceman who had been based
in Somerset in WW2.He and another GI had helped with the apple harvest at the farm where nine-year-old Theo was an evacuee.
A sequence of disturbing events took place there, culminating in murder. The discovery of a human skull in a cider barrel led ultimately to Duke's arrest and conviction. The boy Theo was a principal witness for the prosecution.Alice is too young to have known her father, but she is
staunchly determined to find out what happened. She persuades the reluctant Theo to revisit the farm and trace the people who took part in the apple picking. The horrors of the past take on a frightening immediacy when another murder is committed.Lovesey employs his skills as a master of the crime novel to create a plot
full of surprises and an atmosphere of suspense which grips and tightens like the
cider press itself.A vintage crime story.
