Mosley, Walter
WALKIN' THE DOG

Imprint: Back Bay Books, 2000
Binding: Paperback

Mosley can readily manage more than one empathetic series hero, and in Socr ates Fortlow, introduced in Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned, he has a winner. Socrates is a former jailbird doing his best to go straight in a se amy Los Angeles full of temptation, and the novel is an examination, as pow erfully relaxed as Socrates himself, of how his life works. He lives in a t iny shack in a back alley in Watts, tries to stay out of the way of the eve r-suspicious cops, does a little loving (the cheerful sensuality of Mosley' s writing about sex strikes exactly the right note), unwittingly acts as a role model for an unhappy teenager and eventually becomes a national symbol for his placard-wielding protest against police brutality. Where some writ ers would make this the pivot of their plot, it is no more than incidental to this tale, as Socrates continues to go on his quiet, unostentatious way until the fuss dies down., Very Good+

Mosley, Walter
WALKIN' THE DOG

Imprint: Serpent's Tail, 2002
Binding: Paperback

Nine years after his release from prison, Socrates is still living in a two -room shack in Watts, now with a lover and a steady job. Having responsibil ities and people he cares about makes acting morally even harder - he has s o much more to lose with the police watching his every move. Socrates Fortl ow, first introduced in "Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned", is one of t he essential fictional characters of our times. In "Walkin' the Dog", the p hilosopher with 'rock-breaking hands' has come in from the cold and has to decide at which point an individual must make a stand against the brutality and corruption that surrounds him. At a time when much contemporary fictio n confines itself to the personal, Walter Mosley creates characters that sp eak to the universal and reflect on dilemmas that are the moral questions o f our time., Very Good
