It is twenty-five years after Lord Lucan's mysterious disappearance in the wake of the savage murder of his children's nanny and the vicious attack on his wife. The celebrated psychiatrist Dr Hildegard Wolf is approached in her Paris consulting rooms by not one but two men, both claiming to be Lord Lucan.Dr Wolf is intrigued.Which,if either,of the men is the real 'Lucky' Lucan? Will Lucan's daily appetite for smoked salmon and lamb chops provide the clue?
'Aiding and Abetting' is an outrageous novel which races between Paris,London, the wilds of Scotland and central Africa, taking in blackmail, stigmata,Interpol investigations and Scottish monastries along the way.It shows Muriel Spark's inimitable comic genius at its funniest and subversive best.

Crisp, clean, glossy laminated, grey background and blue and orange letters designed dw/dj by Michael Harvey; with minimal shelf-wear and neglibible creasing
to edges - no nicks or tears present, and spine/backstrip slightly sunned/faded(?) to orange letters.Head+foot of spine/
backstrip minisculely bumped with miniscule reciprocal creases.Top edge slightly dust-soiled and lightly aged/
toned but clean and foxing-free,fore-edge cleaner with minimal spotting; contents bright, tight and clean, near pristine with no dog-ear reading creases to pages' corners.Unblemished, plain orange paper-covered boards with bright, crisap, blocked gilt letters to spine/backstrip with immaculate plain white endpapers with no sign of off-set foxing from dw/dj's inner flaps.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,7-221pp includes half-title+title pages, and 12 chapters.
One day (30 June 1950,to be precise) Fleur Talbot was sitting in a graveyard in
Kensington, writing a poem, eating a sandwich,in need of a job,and despite all that had happened feeling how wonderful it was to be a woman and an artist in the middle of the twentieth century.Ten months earlier she had found a job - and a very odd one too.She was hired by Sir Quentin Oliver, head of the Autobiographical Association (non-profit making),to assist people of very minor eminence to write accounts of their lives.
The half dozen or so members of the Association all suffer from nostalgia, paranoia and a transparent craving to appear likeable, but, eccentric though they may be,they are less puzzling than Sir Quentin himself. Is he a harmless snob or a dangerous manipulator of other people's lives,a psychological Jack the Ripper? For Fleur, engaged in writing her first novel, Warrender Chase, this is,naturally,an absorbing question. Before a year has passed, during which the amazing characters who surround her give her exotic food for thought, even more fantastic questions present themselves.Who is mad and who is sane? Is truth stranger than fiction and, harder to answer, which is which? 'I do dearly love a turn of events,' Fleur confesses at one point; and the slightly sinister, wildly funny story she tells provides rich chances for her,and us,to relish the taste of the unexpected.
'Loitering with Intent' returns to the London scene of some of Muriel Spark's earlier triumphs. For sheer inventiveness and entertainment it must rank as one of her very best books.See also rja2110, rja2113 and rja2114 inclusive ( another copy.) for other Muriel Spark titles.

Edition: UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Not SIGNED.
UK,slim 8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE+/NFINE.
No owner inscrptn and no price-clip to dw/dj.Bright,crisp,clean,glossy laminated,
wrap-around colour painting ['Tours Sunset' by J.M.W. Turner.] illustrated dw/dj,with b/w lettering; with negligible shelf-wear and creasing to edges and corners - no major nicks or tears present.A small closed tear to front, top corner of dw/dj's inner flap and both head+foot of dw/dj's spine/ backstrip is minisculely bumped with reciprocal creasing.Internally to dw/dj a near centrally placed waterstain/splash which only slightly affects the front panel with some minimal wrinkling - board beneath appears unaffected though.Small diagonal crease to top corner of rear, inner flap of dw/dj.Top edges very slightly toned but clean,fore-edges bright and clean; contents bright, tight, clean - pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, would appear unread apart from my own collation. Bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered, publisher's original plain red cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt letters within a grey title panel/box to spine/ backstrip, and immaculate plain red endpapers.UK,slim 8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,7- 160pp [paginated] includes 16 chapters; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages, and a title separator page.Described hard but fairly and honestly - nowhere as bad as it reads or sounds.
'Where's my great crane,'said Tom.
'What have you done with my great crane?'
'Tom,' said his assistant,'You can't go in that crane anymore.'
Tom Richards has fallen from the crane while directing his latest film,'The Hamburger Girl'.But he is now in hospital with broken ribs and a fractured hip,and a
new director has taken his place. The screenplay, even the title, has been changed. Tom feels redundant and angry. As an array of nurses and relations pass in and out of his hospital bedroom, his real life and his imaginative life,as expressed in the films he directs, become inextricably intertwined, even interchangeable. He is obsessed by the image of a girl,'a girl I saw one day on a
campsite in France.I stopped for a coffee at a stall on the edge of the camp.A girl was making hamburgers. She was nothing much, just a girl.Bit I saw her in a frame. When I see people in frames I know I want to make a film of just that picture. . . The charm of this girl is that she has no history.'
'Then she's not real,'said his friend Dave, the taxi driver.
'No she's not real,not yet.'
Tom and his wife Claire; their daughter Marigold for whom Tom has ambivalent feelings; his daughter Cora by his first marriage, beautiful and 'the apple of her father's eye': they and their family and friends jostle for the reader's attention in a sexual merry-go-round which overlays the hate, ambition and desires of some of it's participants, leading to an unexpected
violent ending.
As always,Muriel Spark's power's of
observing human nature are acute and
'Reality and Dreams' is full of the witty exchanges and sharp insights that her readers have come to expect.

laminated, colour pictorial artwork illustrated upper wrap by Linnet Gotch, and b/w author portrait photographic rear wrap with light, negligible shelf-wear or creasing to dw/dj's edges - no nicks or tears present - and miniscule bumping with miniscule reciprocal creases to head of spine/backstrip.Top edge clean and bright, dust free;fore-edge similar but with two tiny, tiny blemishes, contents bright, tight and pristine with no dog-ear reading creases to any page corners.Unblemished,
plain black paper-covered boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt letters to spine /backstrip and near immaculate plain white endpapers.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,9-128pp includes half-title+title pages, verses from W.B.Yeats poem 'Nineteen Hundred and Nineteen',and 6 chapters with other verse/ quotations from W.H.Auden,Ezra Pound, and Walter de la Mare throughout the text.
Parallel after parallel slides wickedly into place as Muriel Spark's hilarious new (then 1974) novel transfigures a marvellously telling satire into a luminous and universal parable.A really nice, exceptional copy, probably the best I have handled.See also rja2110,rja2114 and rja2115 for other Muriel Spark titles.
