Imprint: Meadville, PA, Keystone View Company, 1898

Original stereocard on pale brown board. Two black and white photographs. Board measures 7" x 3 1/2"; photograph measures 6" x 3 1/8." Stereocard is clean and intact overall. Slight dampstaining on the top margin on front and more extensively on the back. Dampstaining is faint and barely affects photograph and text. On the left side of the board, the following text is printed: "Keystone View Company, Manufacturers and Publishers." On the right side of the board, the following is printed: "Meadville, Pa. St. Louis, Mo., Copyright 1898, by B. L. Singley." Title is printed below the right image. On the back to the left side are translations of the title in six other languages. Also on the back is the following: "(61) [This is the stereocard's number in a boxed set]; Situated at the head of ocean steamer navigation, the city of Portland has developed into a wealthy metropolis. There are many imposing business blocks and palatial residences within the city proper, while the various suburbs connected by electric car lines afford attractive homes for those who prefer a residence removed from the busy scenes of the great city. Among the newest buildings is the spacious Hotel Portland, which is modern in construction throughout, and here the overland tourist will find everything provided for his comfort and entertainment while spending a few days in viewing the many points of interest in and about the city." The photograph shows an ornate dining room in Hotel Portland with set tables, a mantle, coffered ceilings, chandeliers, decorative columns, and indoor palm trees. In 1882, railroad magnate Henry Villard (1835-1900) ordered the Northern Pacific Railway to begin construction of a new hotel in Portland, Oregon with the intent of accommodating transcontinental train passengers on their journey. The Portland Hotel was designed by William W. Whidden of the architectural firm, Whidden & Lewis, and Charles Follen McKim of McKim, Mead, & White. Construction began but soon halted after some financial troubles, which were due in part to the Panic of 1884. A syndicate of Portland business leaders took over the project and the Portland Hotel eventually opened in 1890. In its prime, Hotel Portland was a center for socialites and was one of the most prestigious and elegant hotels in the city. It also welcomed the stay of eight U.S. presidents. However, the Portland Hotel was eclipsed by newer hotels over the decades and closed in 1951. Pioneer Courthouse Square now occupies the block where the Portland Hotel once stood, or at least most of the block. Much of the hotel's stone foundation remains beneath the square's sidewalks. The Keystone View Company was founded in 1892 by B. L. Singley. It was once the largest distributor of stereoviews and stereoscopes. In 1963, Keystone was sold to the Mast Development Company and continued to produce eye equipment and overhead projectors as a subsidiary. In 1972, Mast closed Keystone's last manufacturing site in Meadville, Pennsylvania.. Photographic Image. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding

Original Wood Engraving- "The Century Gallery of One Hundred Portraits. George Eliot: Plate V."

Imprint: New York?, The Century Company, 1881

Original black and white wood engraved print. Illustrated portrait of Mary Ann Evans, who went by the pen name of "George Eliot." The entire print measures 9 3/4" x 13 3/4." Print is pristine and intact. This plate was from a collection of 100 and is disbound. A Fine copy. The title and copyright information are printed in the lower-left corner of the print. "George Eliot" and "After the Etching by Rajon of the Crayon, from Life, by W. Burton" are printed directly beneath the portrait. This is Plate 5 of 100 from the Century Gallery of One Hundred Portraits. Mary Ann Evans (1819-1880) was an English novelist, poet, and translator. She also went by Mary Ann or Marian but is best-known by her pen name, George Eliot. Evans was a leading Victorian writer and used her nom de plume for more freedom in her writing since women authors at the time were commonly expected to write lightheartedly romance novels. Wood engraving is a type of woodcut that is known for its fine detail. The name is a bit of a misnomer because it is not an engraving but a type of relief printing. One of the differences between wood engravings and woodcuts is that wood engravings are carved out of end-grain wood as opposed to long-grain. While still an efficient material in its own right, long-grain wood is sometimes prone to splintering during the carving process. End-grain wood acts as a remedy to this in that it is more resistant to splintering. Information about wood engraving and woodcuts cited from site[dot]fas[dot]harvard[dot]edu.. Print. Original Calendar - The Dionne Quintuplets

Imprint: St. Paul, MN, Brown and Bigelow, 1938
Binding: Softback

Original calendar with staple binding. Calendar features a color illustration of the Dionne Quintuplets on the front cover. 9" x 6." Twelve unnumbered pages, complete. Edges and spine have some chipping. This is a twelve-month calendar for the year 1938 and includes pages with health, domestic, and life advice and various recipes. Calendar lists holidays and the birthdays of historical figures and famous celebrities. Among the recipes are "Moulded Peas in Aspic Jelly," "Veal Croquettes," "Mock Turkey Legs," "Split Pea Soup," "Tea Biscuits," "Lime Sherbet," "Vegetable Plate," "Mushrooms, Cheese and Broccoli in a Noodle Ring," "Jellied Mayonnaise," and "Guest Cookies." The Dionne quintuplets were born on May 28, 1934 to Elzire and Oliva Dionne in Callander, Ontario, Canada. They were the first quintuplets to survive their infancy. In order of their birth, the quintuplets comprised Yvonne, Annette, Cecile, Emilie, and Marie. All five sisters lived to adulthood. During this time, it was unknown if quintuplets were even possible, and this, paired with the rarity of quintuplets and the common practice at the time of exhibiting premature "incubator babies" to the public, catapulted the sisters to fame. However, the publicity led to tensions between the sisters' parents and the Ontario government. The quintuplets were declared Wards of the Crown by the government until the age of eighteen with the claim that the girls needed to be protected from exploitation. Despite this claim, the Dionne sisters were exhibited to the public in their new home, Dafoe Nursery, which was known as "Quintland." Quintland rivaled the popularity of Canada's side of Niagara Falls and featured souvenirs and the like for tourists. The Dionne sisters also starred in three Hollywood films. Elzire and Oliva regained guardianship of their daughters between the late 1930s and early 1940s after Dr. Dafoe resigned as guardian in 1939. The quintuplets and their parents moved into a lavish mansion that was paid for by the money the sisters had earned from their fame. The sisters moved out upon turning eighteen and went on to create their own lives. In the 1990s, three of the surviving sisters, Yvonne, Annette, and Cecile, sought redress for being exploited by the government and other agencies during their childhood. In 1998, they reached a $2.8 million settlement from the Ontario government for their exploitation. In 1997, Yvonne, Annette, and Cecile had also written an open letter to the parents of the McCaughey septuplets, advising them to protect their children from publicity.. Ephemera.
