Visually the exterior appearance is acceptable, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its age and nature, i.e. a children's book.It is only the exterior faults that prevents a slightly higher grading. Despite them,it really is still a more than acceptable copy for its cleanliness and brightness. A breezy and entertaining tale set in the days when school desks had inkwells features a renowned, but slightly nutty doctor,a kidnapping, some notorious criminals,a lonely girl, and an extremely humongous baby. Suppose that, more than anything in the world, you wanted a baby brother (although a sister would do). Then suppose that, suddenly,in the middle of the night, one appears on your doorstep - not just a baby though,a giant baby, bigger than any adult you know. For Alice Hicks,it's her every wish come true; for her parents it's a nightmare. But as the family comes to love their newest member, strangers have other ideas of what to do with a baby that size. Each of the characters is brought uniquely to life, from determined, spirited Alice to her uninterested father and all the rather one-dimensional characters they encounter along the way. The humour is apparent in both the characters and the situations in this simplistic yet fantastical plot. Fritz Wegner, born 1924,Vienna,but moved to England when he was 14.Studied at St Martin's School of Art.Since 1946,he has worked freelance as a book illustrator for British and American publishers, for magazines, and in advertising, and has developed a wiry, controlled pen line and a stylised, often humorous manner.Visiting lecturer at St Martin's School of Art. The Eastern Front was the scene of the most decisive campaign of WW2.Hitler's elite soldiers, the Waffen-SS,fought in the East from the beginning of the Russian campaign in 1941 to the fall of Berlin in May 1945,and the SS's development and military professionalism is bound up with the war in the Soviet Union. As the war in Russia progressed, the formations of the Waffen-SS distinguished themselves in the most demanding theatre of WW2.The premier Waffen-SS formations, the Leibstandarte,Das Reich,Totenkopf and Wiking Divisions, showed themselves to be masters of mechanised warfare and the all-arms battle.'SS: Hell on the Eastern Front' is a detailed accounr, enhanced by more than 100 b/w photographs,of every aspect of the Waffen-SS's war on the Eastern Front: its battles.its organisation, tactics and equipment. Read what it was like to take part in Operation 'Barbarossa',the opening assault against Russia in the summer of 1941,when the Waffen-SS fought its way to the very gates of Moscow; the first dreadful winter in Russia, during which temperatures dropped to 40 degrees below zero; the clash of massed armour at Kursk; and other epic encounters of the war in the East: it also examines the recruitment and organisation of those foreign legions of the SS that fought on the Eastern Front. Also covered in full is every aspect of the Waffen-SS's war - away from the battlefield - against Soviet partisans. In addition, the book examines the military consequences of Waffen-SS soldiers being ideologically indoctrinated, their concept of hardness often resulted in atrocities and the murder of civilians and prisoners. Above all,'SS: Hell on the Eastern Front' provides an insight into how Waffen-SS individuals and units met and often mastered their Red Army adversaries, first during the offensive campaigns of 1941-43, but most strikingly during the great offensive actions of the last two years of the war. With detailed appendices covering the order of battle of the Waffen-SS in the East, plus a rank and award tables,'SS: Hell on the Eastern front' is the most detailed study of the Waffen-SS's war in Russia yet published. Author and illustrator of curious little (16mo Christmas stocking-sized) children's books, which, with their handwritten texts and Dutch doll characters, show the influence of the Uptons' [Florence Kate - illustrator and originator of the Golliwog and Dutch Doll escapades and of Bertha, her mother, the writer of the rhymes for them.] slightly earlier 'Golliwog' series. The drawings are obviously the work of an amateur, but there are several delightful endpaper designs. The particular title 'Votes for Catharine Susan and Me.' satirises the female emancipation movement. She is thought to have produced around 25 titles for Castell Brothers and produced work for the 'Little Folks.' periodical. Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It really is an exceptional and exemplary copy for its cleanliness and brightness. Ally McCoist is undoubtedly the finest Scottish goal-scorer of the last 30 years. In a career that spanned over two decades,he won the hearts and minds of legions of fans as he established himself as one of the most popular sporting personalities in the UK.Despite having ended his playing days five years ago (then 2008),his appeal still endures and his regular television appearances on programmes such as A Question of Sport have generated a new wave of admirers.Ally McCoist is truly here to stay! A schoolboy prodigy,it was always clear that McCoist was destined for top flight football. At just 16 he signed gis first professional contract with Scottish First Division side St Johnstone. It was in the 1980/81 season that he shot to prominence, scoring 22 league goals and playing a starring role for the Scotland Youth team. His outstanding performances propelled him into the limelight and he was soon hot property, coveted by many First Division clubs. After two years of mixed fortunes at Sunderland,McCoist went back north of the border and signed for his boyhood heroes Glasgow Rangers. He enjoyed unprecedented success there for the next fifteen years, establishing himself as arguably the greatest goal-scorer ever to play for the club.Indeed,by the end of the 1985/86 season he was top goalscorer in the Premier Division. He not only gave heart and soul for his club but was also capped 61 times for Scotland. This authoritative and affectionate portrait of this much-loved sportsman charts the highs and lows of a fascinating career - including a couple of injury-stricken years - culminating in McCoist reaching legendary status. It also looks at the events that helped to shape his life, such as how he overcame homesickness when first playing for an English club, the effect the death of Davie Cooper had on him and how he coped when his young son had to undergo several life-saving operations. Having hung up his boots, his vibrant personality made him a natural for the television screen and he carved a niche for himself with a role in sporting media. Now, however,McCoist has come full circle and returned 'home' to be asistant manager at his beloved Rangers. This wonderful book is a must-read for any football fan or indeed for anyone captivated by this larger-than-life character. UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn thus.[True UK,HB, 1st edn was quickly reprinted,a lower print run.An undated - possibly the same year? - but virtually, almost identical (priced @ 15.99 as opposed to 14.99) issued edn by The Book People - this example.] NFINE/FINE.No owner inscrptn and no price-clip to dw/dj.Bright,crisp,clean, glossy laminated, montage'd colour pictorial artwork by Sarah Perkins, illustrated dw/dj,with black +brown lettering; with virtually NO shelf- wear or creasing to edges and corners - and NO nicks or tears present either.Top edges slightly thumbed in the headband area otherwise fairly clean,fore-edges generally bright and clean; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - near pristine - no intentional dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, though uniform, faint accidental, top corner creases on title page and up to pp24; otherwise would appear unread - apart from my own collation.Bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,publisher's original plain blue cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked silver gilt letters to spine/backstrip and immaculate plain white endpapers.UK,8vo HB +dw/dj,1st edn thus,11-322pp [paginated] includes 13 chapters, the first 12 of which each have a footnote; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages,a dedication,a thanks page,a title separator page and 2pp blanks at the rear of the book.Author's debut novel and Whitbread Book of the Year winner. A really exceptional example in an exceptional condition and would make a very acceptable completist,stop-gap filler - because of the notorious scarcity and expense of the true UK HB 1st edn. Want more Kate ATKINSON titles? For similar and other titles, please search my MODERN FIRSTS2 catalogue. Ruby Lennox was conceived grudgingly by Bunty and born while her father,George, was in the Dog and Hare in Doncaster telling a woman in an emerald dress and a D-cup that he wasn't married.Bunty had never wanted to marry George, but he was all that was left. She really wanted to be Vivien Leigh or Celia Johnson, swept off to America by a romantic hero. But here she was, stuck in a flat above the pet shop in an ancient street beneath York Minster, with sensible and sardonic Patricia aged five, greedy cross-patch Gillian who refused to be ignored, and Ruby . . . Ruby tells the story of The Family, from the day at the end of the nineteenth century when a travelling French photographer catches frail beautiful Alice and her children, like flowers in amber,to the startling, witty, and memorable events of Ruby's own life. 'Behind the Scenes at the Museum' is a multi-faceted,richly comic, richly tragic tour-de-force,an epic family chronicle that introduces a wonderfully original narrative voice. Boris Akunin is a pseudonym of critic and essayist Grigory Chkhartshvili who published his first mysteries in 1998.He has been compared to Gogol,Tolstoy and Arthur Conan Doyle, and his Erast Fandorin books have sold over eight million copies in Russia alone. It was only after the first books of the Fandorin series were published to critical acclaim that his true identity was admitted. 3rd title in the critically acclaimed crime fiction series of novels with the 19th-century James Bond, Erast Fandorin. Akunin's specialty is historical mysteries set in Imperial Russia. It takes love and wit to revive the corpse of the country-house murder; Akunin has both and his borrowings from Agatha Christie and Conan-Doyle have already earned him an 8 million strong readership in his native Russia. The mysterious murder in 1870's Paris of an eccentric collector and his entire household yields a single clue that sends Commissioner Gauche,'Investigator for Especially Important Cases',on the maiden voyage of the Leviathan.Cooped up on board, the prime suspects exhibit all sorts of odd behaviour: drug-taking,paranoia,a refusal to admit to visiting Paris and wearing non-European clothes are enough to rouse suspicion.Only one passenger,a stuttering Russian diplomat,Erast Fandorin, has an eye for a telling discrepancy. Though the red herrings stink and the scenario is ridiculous,Akunin's affection for the genre's conventions and his elegant skits on national stereotypes and political rivalries make for an amusing voyage. Grand Duke Georgii Alexandrovich arrives in Moscow for the coronation, accompanied by three of his children and their alluring governess,Mademoiselle Declique. During an afternoon stroll, daughter Xenia is dragged away by bandits, only to be rescued by an elegant gentleman and his oriental sidekick. The passing heroes introduce themselves as Fandorin and Masa, but panic ensues when they realise that four-year old Mikhail has been snatched in the confusion. A ransom letter arrives from Dr Lind,an international criminal and the Moriarty to Fandorin's Sherlock Holmes. The letter demands the handover of the Count Orlov,an enormous diamond on the royal sceptre which is due to play a part in the coronation.Fandorin suggests that the value of the stone is paid in 'installments',buying the party a week to ensure the young boy's safe return. But can the gentleman detective find Mikhail in time,or will the Grand Duke's son meet with the same gruesome fate as Lind's last abductee - whom Fandorin could do nothing to save? Will Fandorin succumb to the affections of Xenia? And why is he falling to his death on the very first page? Our inimitable hero returns in a tantalisingly closely-matched battle of wills and of wiles. 2nd novel in the critically acclaimed crime fiction series of novels with the 19th-century James Bond,Erast Fandorin.Akunin's specialty is historical mysteries set in Imperial Russia. The Russo-Turkish war is at a critical juncture, and Erast Fandorin,broken-hearted and disillusioned, has gone to the front in an attempt to forget his sorrows.Captured by the Turks,he wins his freedom in a game of backgammon, before finding himself the unlikely rescuer of Varvara Suvorova,a `progressive` Russian woman trying to make her way to the Russian headquarters to join her fiance. Fandorin's efforts to steer clear of affairs of state are thwarted when a traitor is discovered in the Russian camp.Within days,Varvara's fiance has been accused of treason,a Turkish victory looms on the horizon, and there are rumours that one of Lady Astair's Azazel orphans may be making his own bid for power. Our reluctant gentleman sleuth will need to resurrect all his dormant powers of detection if he is to unmask the traitor, help the Russians to victory and smooth the path of young love in this, the third, sparkling page-turner from Boris Akunin. When George Alagiah was five years old,he and his family emigrated from Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) to Ghana. It was a journey faced with hope: the Alagiahs were part of the original Tamil diaspora,a family fleeing ethnic conflict for a country itself facing a new beginning.Ghana was revelling in being the first African country to gain independence from the British Empire, and when Accra hosted the 19655 Organisation for African Unity summit, anything seemed possible. But just twelve short months later,a coup d'etat brought this childlike optimism to a close. . . From these formative childhood years to his time as the BBC's Africa Correspondent,'A Passage to Africa.' is George Alagiah's powerful testament to a continent in which he feels at home. With unblinking candour and compelling insight, he chronicles the horror, the hope and the humanity he has borne witness to: from the 'kleptocracy' of Mobutu's Zaire to the political expediency of Mugabe's Aimbabwe; from the playground petulance of Liberia'a child soldiers to the towering moral authority of Nelson Mandela. And with South Africa drawing the era of national liberation to a close,he looks to the future, and to the 'African renaissance' led by such leaders as Yoweri Museveni and Thabo Mbeki. It is the way George Alagiah mixes political insight with personal testimony that makes this such a truly remarkable book.'A Passage to Africa.' is a powerful, passionate,though-provoking account: an autobiography not so much of George Alagiah, but of Africa itself. Sheherezade, beautiful and talented daughter of the Shah's Wazir,is determined to put an end to the cruelty of her ruler. For the Shah has vowed to take a new bride every night, and behead her come the morning.Destined for the same gruesome fate,Sheherezade devises a beguiling plan and,on her wedding night, she begins to weave her tantalizing stories - tales that will bewitch her husband for a thousand and one nights. . . 'The Arabian Nights' is a classic collection of popular stories from Arabia,India and Persia. They recreate a fabulous and fanciful world of sorcerers, sages and Jinnis, but also of ordinary people who find themselves in extraordinary situations. In this selection Brian Alderson strips the stories of their archaic prose and,in the best tradition of European folk tales, reveals an intimate and colloquial version of the tales. It is a classic retelling which includes the most famous and delightful of Sheherezade's enduring stories: 'Sinbad the Sailor','Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves' and 'Aladdin'.Faithful to their Eastern origins, the author presents them in a form ideally suited for reading aloud. Michael Foreman's stunning illustrations and embellishments retain all the excitement and mysticism of the original tales. They capture the essence of the east and blend perfectly with the text in a sumptuous book of stories as vivid as they were over a thousand and one years ago. Michael Foreman, born Pakefield,Suffolk, 1938.Studied at Lowestoft School of Art and at the Royal College of Art.Lecturer at St Martin's School of Art (1963-65),the London College of Printing (1967/8),the Royal College of Art (1968-70) and the Central School of Arts and Crafts (1972). Art Director of Playboy magazine,Chicago (1965) and the King Magazine,London (1966).Painter,etcher,illustrator and writer of children's books. His illustrative work is distinctive: he often works in colour or halftone, creating luminous effects with veils of thinly diluted pigment over delicate pencil outlines; in his etched illustrations,he uses soft ground techniques to achieve subtle tonal graduations. His imagery, ostensibly decorative, humorous or with a sometimes child-like appearance, often has menacing or bizarre overtones. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too! When Bram Stoker was writing his famous novel, 'Dracula',at the end of the 19th century he received a visitor named Joe Bodenland. While the real Count Dracula came from a distant past, Bodenland arrived from Stoker's future,on a desperate mission to save humanity from the Undead. This great adventure merges supernatural horror with breathtaking science fantasy. The chief characters are Stoker,Bodenland, and Dracula himself, shrouded in a wickedness bred by centuries of evolution.Involved in the accelerating pace of events is Bodenland's family - his wife, lured beyond death, and the young newly-weds,Larry and Kylie, confronting a stormy marriage. Bram Stoker joins Bodenland in a crusade to exterminate all vampires once and for all.But the trail which begins in Utah in the 21st century ends up far away in space and time,in a climax of destruction which changes the world for ever - and its inhabitants with it. This paradoxical quest beyond life, death and time itself is Brian Aldiss at his romantic and imaginative best. Top edge lightly dust-soiled,fore-edges clean and contents bright, tight and clean.Green paper-covered boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt letters to spine/backstrip and plain white endpapers.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,284pp. Spanning fifty years and three continents - from pre-war Suffolk,to the Far East in the 1940's,to Oxford and America in the present day - 'Forgotten Life' is a novel of' immense scope, encompassing comedy and tragedy, joy and grief,as its three main characters try to work out the most difficult problem of all - the meaning of their own lives. Clement Winter is an analyst and Oxford don; his wife,Sheila,is the author of the bestselling Kerinth fantasy novels. His older brother Joseph has died recently, leaving behind an assortment of letters and papers, through which Clement tries to make sense of Joseph's life.Born in the 1920's in a small Suffolk town and haunted from his childhood by his mother's apparent rejection of him,Joseph seizes eagerly on the war as a means of escape, serving with the Forgotten Army in Burma and, after the Japanese surrender,in Sumatra. His later life is footloose and dissatisfied.Clement and Sheila's lives,by contrast, seem calm and prosperous. But even as he tries to assimilate and understand his dead brother's life, unexpected upheavals bring forcibly to Clement's attention how little he understands his own. This major contemporary novel is the most profound and extraordinary work yet from the prolific and inventive Brian Aldiss. Colour pictorial dw/dj by Gary Embury, with some light creasing to edges and light bumping/creasing to both head+foot of spine/backstrip - but no nicks or tears.Fore-edges slightly aged as usual/ normal and a couple of oblique creases to pp299/300,else contents bright, tight and clean.Blue paper-covered boards with gilt letters to spine/backstrip and plain white eps.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,335pp includes b/w chapter headpieces by both Brian Aldiss and Rosamund Chorley. As one of Britain's most revered authors, Aldiss has created a breathtaking new collection of recent short stories - a unique mingling of anthology and chronicle novel. Many of the stories are inter-related,their themes being life, death, transformation.A linking commentary between stories shows how such themes are explored in storytelling - and,in one of the most amusing links, how a story may be stretched out until long after bedtime. And, as usual with this author, humour is not lacking,as in the profoundly Shakespearean 'If Hamlet's Uncle Had Been a Nicer Guy',which proves that the Prince of Denmark was grossly overweight, and in the glimpse of a bizarre cost-conscious heaven in 'Evans in His Moment of Glory'.
