Described hard,but fairly and honestly - still an accetable copy of an uncommon title. Assumed to be the first title in this series about a couple of jointed,wooden,undressed Dutch dolls (they are clothed in some of the illustrations!) with 20 delightful colour plates depicting the everyday life of the doll twins: having tea parties,washing up,playing games (badminton),dressing up after an invite for a party,playing the fiddle (though in reality,a cello is illustrated!),etc. Kathleen Ainslie (b.1883 - d. 1935 - active 1903-10.) Author and illustrator of curious little (16mo Christmas stocking-sized) children's books, which,with their handwritten texts and Dutch doll characters,show the influence of the Uptons' [Florence Kate - illustrator and originator of the Golliwog and Dutch Doll escapades and of Bertha,her mother,the writer of the rhymes for them.] slightly earlier 'Golliwog' series.The drawings are obviously the work of an amateur,but there are several delightful endpaper designs.The particular title 'Votes for Catharine Susan and Me.' satirises the female emancipation movement.She is thought to have produced around 25 titles for Castell Brothers and produced work for the 'Little Folks.' periodical.
