NEW MAPS OF HELL - A Survey of Science Fiction.

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn thus.[Originally and first published USA,Harcourt Brace & Co,1960, then first UK edn,Gollancz,1961 and this the Science Fiction Book Club edn,1962.Number 61 in the Club's publication list.] FINE/VG.No owner inscrptn and no price-clip to dw/dj - absence of publisher's price - book club subscription only.Slightly grubbed white background with an orange design and lettering to front panel of dw/dj,spine/backstrip grubbed with a couple of splash stains and also with orange lettering, rear panel also white and lightly grubbed, but without illustration/decoration other than orange text of 'Science Fiction Book Club; all with negligible shelf-wear or creasing to edges and corners - no major nicks, tears or splits present. Both head+foot of spine/backstrip of dw/dj with some minimal bumping with reciprocal creasing and some miniscule chipping with some minimal loss.Top+fore-edges toned; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - near pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, would appear unread - apart from my own collation.Sharp-cornered,publisher's original plain pale blue cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked brown ink printed letters to spine/backstrip which is lightly faded, and clean plain white endpapers.UK,slim 8vo HB+ dw/dj,1st edn thus,9-161pp [paginated] includes author's foreword,6 sections/chapters+ essays, and index of names+titles (sci-fi authors+their works); plus [unpaginated] half-title+title page,a dedication and a contents list/table with poem to its reverse. Though Kingsley is best known for social comedies as his first 'Lucky Jim' (1954),which won him the sobriquet of Angry Young Man in the catch-phrase of the time,he has also been closely connected with SF throughout his professional life. He delivered a series of lectures on SF in 1959 at Princeton University, probably to their surprise since SF was presumably not the context in which he was invited to speak.Revised, these were published as a book,'New Maps of Hell' (1960),which was certainly the most influential critical work on SF up to that time, although not the most scholarly. It strongly emphasized the dystopian elements of SF. Kingsley, himself a satirist and debunker of note, saw SF as an ideal medium for satirical sociological extrapolation. Hitherto most writing on SF had regarded it as first and foremost a literature of technology. As a survey the book is one-sided and by no means thorough, but it is witty, perceptive and quietly revolutionary. Kingsley Amis, one of English literature's most versatile craftsman,is also a master of the art of drinking. From his many years of experience, and with an eye both to economics and to enjoyment,he presents this witty and masterly informative handbook for the drinker, amateur and professional. From a guide to alcoholic literature,he moves to a selection of prime drink recipes - the fruit of untold years' research in the field.Among his list can be found personal extravaganzas like the Lucky Jim and the Kingers and such irresistibly titled brews as Reginald Bosanquet's Golden Elixir and Evelyn Waugh's Noonday Reviver. Practical guidance on equipment and the store cupboard is followed by a wealth of information about wine (including a Wine Shopper's Guide) and incidental intelligence on drinking abroad. On a less serious note,Kingsley Amis gives us the riotous Mean Sod's Guide ('Vital requirement: prepare pre- and post-dinner drinks in some undiscoverable pantry or broom cupboard').He has thoughtfully included a section on dealing with The Hangover, suggestions for a Boozing Man's Diet, and finally for those for whom prevention is better than cure some notes on How Not to Get Drunk. With its apt and highly amusing drawings by Nicolas Bentley, this book is an ideal gift for the drinking man,of whatever pocket or preference,it is as pleasing as a well-made cocktail. Nicolas Clerihew Bentley (1907-78).Born Highgate,London.Son of E.C. Bentley, the novelist, leader writer for The Daily Telegraph and inventor of the four-line verse form known as the 'clerihew'. Studied at University College School, London and at Heatherley's School of Art. Before and after WW1 (during which he was deputy director of the Home Intelligence Unit and editor in the Publications Division of the Ministry of Information), he worked freelance as a journalist, author and humorous illustrator.Director of Andre Deutsch (from 1950).Drew the daily pocket cartoon for The Daily Mail (1958-62).An editor for Sunday Times Publications Ltd.,(1962-3) and for Thomas Nelson & Son (1963-7). Nicolas Bentley's illustrations for Belloc's 'New Cautionary Tales' (as successor to B. T. Blackwood) estalished his importance as an illustrator. His stylish, witty and economical drawings, often depicting figures without background or setting, owed much to his admiration for the work of the French graughtsman Caran D;Ache and the Swede Olaf Gulbransson. Elected FSIA (1946) and the FRSA (1974). Since April 2013,and again in March 2015, and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering its prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its qualifying compensation rates too! UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.NMINT/NMINT.An unread copy.No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip to dw/dj.Colour,pictorial illustrated,wrap-around artwork by Alistair Taylor, with a miniscule bump/ crease to foot of spine/backstrip - no other shelf-wear or bumping to corners and no other nicks or tears present.Top+fore- edges bright and clean, contents bright, tight and pristine with no dog-ear creases to corners.Unblemished, plain red paper-covered bds with bright, crisp, stamped silver gilt letters to spine/backstrip and immaculate, plain white eps.A superb copy in an exceptional grade.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj, 1st edn,8-255pp includes half-title+title pages, and contents list. Stanley Duke is more or less comfortably settled into early middle-age,with a well- paid job and an apparently happy second marriage, when Steve, his son by his first wife, begins to display the first signs of acute schizophrenia. There is nothing at all funny about madness in the family, but the stages of Steve's illness, set out in all their desperate banality, now and again touching upon horror, have an effect on those around him that ranges from the devastating to the hilarious. As Steve's condition deteriorates and father and son fall into the hands of the women, including the female psychiatrist in charge of the boy's case, the situation exposes in its true awfulness and strangeness the character of the women in Stanley's life. Could it be that there are other, subtler, more insidious forms of madness than Steve's? Amis's new novel (then 1984),latest in the rich comic vein that runs from 'Lucky Jim' to 'Jake's Thing',negotiates brilliantly the difficult course that runs between tragedy and helpless laughter. It is not a book that is likely to win many prizes for fairness or fashionable social attitudes, but readers will delight in its triumphant handling of the unconscionable, the unbearable and the unspeakable.See also rja531,rja1222, rja2068,rja2069 and rja2072,rja2073,and also rja2101 for other Kingsley Amis titles. Edition: UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Not SIGNED.

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.[Ex-Public Library.] VG-/VG-. Library's black ink oblong stamps (2 each) to both the front and rear pastedowns with both the front and rear free endpapers glued to same and obscuring the legibility of their lettering,a subsequent owner's handwritten pair of blue ink initials above the 'M' of Martin on the title page which also has a black ink alpha-numerical library number to its reverse,no other library notation or stamps present, and the dw/dj has a price-clip.Bright,crisp,clean,glossy, wrap-around red background, with capitalised yellow-lettered title and capitalised,black-lettered author's name to front panel of dw/dj, spine/backstrip with minimal fade and similarly coloured+lettered author+title as front and publisher's red+black lettered+illustrated colophon,to foot of same, rear panel with white single line ruled border to author's b/w photographic side profile portrait and his capitalised,black-lettered name below it.Some minimal shelf-wear of rubbing+ miniscule chipping with miniscule loss,to edges and lower corner tips due in part to laminate breakdown. Both head and foot of spine/backstrip of dw/dj with some chipping and colour paper loss - the foot more so than the head, and gentle pushing to head+foot of boards spine.Top two corner tips with miniscule rubbing/chipping and reciprocal colour paper loss – but no major, tears or splits present.Superficial scoring and creasing to front panel of dw/dj,rear panel with similar light scoring and other wrinkles but without any penetration to respective board beneath.Dw/dj's rear inner flap with wrinkled laminate strip and an approx. 1" vertical closed tear at top+bottom beside the laminate strip but to the unlaminated paper of the inner flap.Top edges without any trace of yellow topstain, but is slightly aged/toned with minimal sporadic foxing/spotting, fore-edges less aged/toned and slightly brighter, clean with one blemish - thicker paper than usual/normal has been used in the production by the publisher - so appears deckled (untrimmed).Contents bright, tight, generally clean with some minor, minimal, sporadic and random foxing, else solid - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips, appears unread, other than my own collation.Publisher's bright, clean, generally sharp-cornered - exception of top two tips with minor pushing - original plain black paper-covered boards with spine/backstrip's rear gutter's fold/crease with an approx. 3/4" split at it's head, and bright, crisp, blocked gilt lettered and gilt illustrated publisher's colophon to remainder, and clean plain white verso+recto of front+rear glued free endpapers respectively.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,7-224pp [paginated] includes 12 [January to December] monthly chapters; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages, and a dedication with a blank reverse which has minimal blemishes. Described honestly and fairly. Author's 3rd novel.                 Visually the exterior appearance is acceptable, and even internally, the book is also in an acceptable, readable condition/state of presentation for a book of its age and nature, i.e. an ex-public library book.It is only the faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading.Despite them,it really is still a desirable stop-gap filler copy.               Telling the story of two foster-brothers, Gregory Riding and Terry Service, and their rising and falling fortunes. This was the first example of Amis's fondness for symbolically "pairing" characters in his novels, which has been a recurrent feature in his fiction since [Martin Amis and Martina Twain in 'Money', Richard Tull and Gwyn Barry in 'The Information',and Jennifer Rockwell and Mike Hoolihan in 'Night Train']                        Timid, balding and meaningfully short,Terence Service tiptoes through the flat and life of his flamboyant foster-brother,Gregory Riding. Terry can scarcely remember the last time a girl agreed to sleep with him, although he does occasionally glimpse the stray naked bit of some visitor to Gregory's bed as he creeps through to the kitchen. Keenly aware of the time-tested theory that sexual success is the surest guarantee of sexual success,Terry longs for a start of any kind.                               In 'Success' Martin Amis displays all the assured skill and irresistibly acid wit for which he was honoured with the Somerset Maugham Award in 1974.                                   Please contact seller, because of the lighter weight and the value of this item, for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page! THE BIOGRAPHER'S MOUSTACHE.

Imprint: LONDON.FLAMINGO,1995.
Edition: UK,8vo HB+protected dw/dj,1st edn.

UK,8vo HB+protected dw/dj,1st edn. FINE/FINE.No owner inscrptn, and no price- clip to dw/dj.Bright,clean,protected, glossy laminated colour pictorial artwork illustrated upper wrap by Bill Gregory; with minimal shelf-wear and negligible creasing to edges - no nicks or tears present - and no corners bumped.Top+fore-edges slightly aged/tanned - as usual/normal - otherwise clean, contents bright, tight and near pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to page corners.Unblemished, publisher's original, plain, black cloth bds with bright, crisp, stamped gilt letters to spine/backstrip and near immaculate plain pale blue eps. UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,1-282pp includes half-title+title pages, and 30 chapters. Gordon Scott-Thompson,a struggling hack, gets commissioned to write the biography of veteran novelist,Jimmie Fane.It is a task which proves to be fraught with extraordinary and unforeseen difficulties. Fane,an unashamed snob, has many pet hates, including younger men with moustaches and trendy pronunciation.Scott-Thompson, however,is extremely attached to his own moustache and not so particular about his use of language. It doesn't help matters that Fane's wife Joanna isn't yet sure what she feels about moustaches, but has decided views on younger men. So,will Gordon have to part with his most distinctive facial feature for the sake of a publisher's advance? Or perhaps advances of an amorous nature will lead Gordon into even more dangerous complications. . . . Kingsley Amis's keen eye for the nuances of class difference has never been put to sharper use.Deliciously wicked and delightfully mischievious,'The Biographer's Moustache' mercilessly exposes a literary world of pretension and vanity while poignantly revealing the potential for love across the social divide.Another superb copy. Imprint: LONDON.FLAMINGO,1995.
Edition: UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,author SIGNED,1st edn.
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: AUTHOR signed - without dedication.

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,author SIGNED,1st edn. FINE/NFINE. No previous owner inscrptn but small, neat ink, author's handwritten signature to title page just under the book's title.Dw/dj with minimal shelf-wear and creasing to edges apart from some light bumping and creasing to both head+foot of spine/backstrip,the foot less so than the head.Top edge very lightly dust-soiled with fore-edges lightly marked.Contents bright, tight and near pristine.Black paper-covered boards with blocked gilt letters to spine/backstrip and plain maroon endpapers. Amis's best-known novels are 'Money','London Fields',and 'The Information',commonly referred to as his 'London Trilogy'.Although the books share little in terms of plot and narrative, they all examine the lives of middle-aged men, exploring the sordid, debauched, and post-apocalyptic undercurrents of life in late 20th-century Britain. Amis's London protagonists are anti-heroes: they engage in questionable behaviour, are passionate iconoclasts, and strive to escape the apparent banality and futility of their lives. There aren't many ways for one writer to hurt another.Even if the literary world were as hopelessly corrupt as some people like to think it is, a writer cannot seriously damage a rival. This is the unwelcome conclusion reached by Richard Tull, failed novelist, when he contemplates the agonising success of his best friend (and worst enemy) Gwyn Barry.A scathing review, a scurrilous profile? Such things might hurt Gwyn Barry, but they wouldn't hurt him.So Richard Tull is obliged to look elsewhere,to the weapons of the outside world - seductions and succubi, hoaxes, mind games,frame-ups,sabotage - until at last Richard finds what he is looking for: a true professional - someone who hurts people in exchange for cash. In 'The Information' Martin Amis returns to the big picture of 'Money' and 'London Fields'.The book takes in the whole of society, with the possible exception of the middle classes. This leaves us with the very rich, the very desperate, and the very bohemian.Comedy, the author has said,is the only genre with any future: it is all that's left.So 'The Information' is a comedy that goes where comedy shouldn't normally go, into the territories abandoned by romance,by satire and by tragedy. Summer 1970 - a long, hot summer. In a castle in Italy, half a dozen young lives are afloat on the sea of change, trapped inside the history of the sexual revolution. The girls are acting like boys, and the boys are going on acting like boys, and Keith Nearing - twenty years old, a literature student all colgged up with the English novel - is struggling to twist feminism and the rise of women towards his own ends. The sexual revolution may have been a velvet revolution (in at least two senses),but it wasn't bloodless - and now,in the twenty-first century, the year 1970 finally catches up with Keith Nearing. UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.NFINE/VG+.No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip to dw/dj.Colour pictorial,wrap-round artwork by Ian Beck, illustrated dw/dj; with minimal shelf-wear and negligible creasing to edges. However, ubiquitous breakdown of laminate covering to dw/dj,has left some miniscule chipping/ rubbing to bottom+top edges, with similar to both head+foot of spine/backstrip and a small closed tear to upper, front edge and rubbing to three corners.Top edge coloured,fore-edge lightly aged - as usual/normal - with minimal spotting; contents bright, tight and clean with dog- ear creasing to bottom corners of pp33-36 and pp57/8.Clean,plain green paper-covered bds with bright, crisp, stamped gilt letters to spine/backstrip and clean, plain beige eps.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,9-224pp includes half-title+title pages, contents list and 15 chapters.Described hard but fairly, overall,an acceptable solid, sound copy. The hero of Amis's flesh-with-blood novel is a fourteen-year-old boy hovering hopefully on the brink between inexperience and initiation. The delicious and totally mind-consuming prospect of sex, which tempted him into orgiastic games with his friend Reg,is now centred on the less satisfying (at present) but equally hot pursuit of those mysterious, formidable creatures - girls. Riverside Villas is the scene of Peter's exploits - and someone's crime. The victim, dripping wet and with a bleeding head- wound, staggers in through the french windows of No.19 and dies.Motive - none that the police can pinpoint.Weapon - a weird spiked club,no trace of fingerprints.Opportunity - only one suspect has a foolproof alibi. As the mystery deepens, further attacks and an enigmatic note reveal the presence in the small country town of a learned, thoughtful criminal.Only Peter guesses the truth,a dangerous truth that leads him to the river bank by moonlight. . . . . . Kingsley Amis's setting of an armchair murder story, with its authentic 1930's atmosphere, against the brilliantly witty yet subtle and sympathetic description of Peter's sexual antics is a triumph - clever, comic and chilling.[Those who may wish to pit their wits against the author's and solve the mystery for themselves are advised to study pages . . . no,you'll have to buy the book to find out!!!] See also rja531,rja1222,rja2068 to rja2070 inclusive,rja2073 and rja2101 for other Kingsley Amis titles. UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE/FINE.No owner inscrptn and no price-clip (£14.99) to dw/dj.Bright,crisp,clean,glossy laminated, colour pictorial illustration to a white background dw/dj,with red+black lettering; with negligible shelf-wear and creasing to edges and corners - no nicks or tears present.Top+fore-edges bright and clean; contents bright, tight, clean - pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, appears unread - apart from my own collation.Bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,publisher's original, plain black cloth bds with bright, crisp, stamped gilt letters to spine/backstrip,a b/w striped headband, and immaculate plain blue eps.UK, 8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,1-296pp [paginated] includes 21 chapters, plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages, separate title separator page, and 2pp blanks at the rear. Kingsley Amis's new novel begins like an academic romp but soon takes off into territory which Amis has made triumphantly his own - the battle of the sexes and the conflicting claims of love and integrity. Richard Vaisey is a respected scholar,a good chap who perhaps enjoys slightly too much being 'a bit of a professor'.So far he has managed to survive the ministrations of Cordelia, his manipulating wife. But then he falls for Anna,a Russian poet and dissident whose flamboyant personal appeal makes the awfulness of her verse.A petition is being organized which will safeguard her brother, imprisoned in the disintegrating Soviet Union. But Richard is clear-eyed about the quality of her work. Will he sign? And what effect will his decision have on his marriage, his job,and his life? This is a love story, but as always with Amis,it develops through a variety of wickedly funny scenes and characters. For several books the 'Old Devil' has been at the very top of his form, and 'The Russian Girl' is as entertaining and thought provoking as anything Amis has written. Top+ fore-edge clean, with pristine contents.UK,8vo HB +dw/dj,1st edn,11-176pp. This novel was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1991.It is notable partly because the events occur in a reverse chronology, with time passing in reverse and the main character,a Nazi concentrattion camp doctor, becoming younger and younger during the novel.Reverse chronology is a technique borrowed from Kurt Vonnegut's 'Slaughterhouse 5',(1969) and Philip K. UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,9-92pp [paginated] includes half-title+title pages, author foreword,8 chapters. Seventeen-year-old Clive Rayner was pissed off.It seemed so long ago since he was at school that he could hardly remember it and now he had no job and only his Giro money to spend. When his stepfather wasn't hassling him about his failure to contribute to the household exchequer, his mother was accusing him of being stupid,or some nosy policeman was sneaking up on him asking questions.Clive knew that he wasn't stupid but life seemed pointless and above all,it was boring. It was when he was in the local Indian restaurant,The Bengal Light, with his mate Terry and their two birds,Marilyn and Paula, that Clive hit on the idea of breaking into Butterfield's warehouse. With the girls safely out of the way on a bus,Clive and Terry were free to embark on the raid. The result of their break-in leaves Clive in a totally unexpected situation - is he the offender or is he the victim? His crime has serious consequences, but as a first offender he gets only forgiveness from everyone - or nearly everyone. He is bewildered by his sense of guilt and left uneasy by his need for punishment. Amis's new novel (then 1994),which many readers will see as a precursor to 'Lucky Jim'.Robin Davies, its young hero,is both a shrewd observer and an energetic actor in a drama which takes him from school to Oxford. With him we live through all the pangs of South London adolescence in a pre-war household whose gods enshrine the gentility principle.Robin's relationship with his father,at first suffocating, becomes in time one of poignant, desperate affection - but not before Robin has undergone a full series of rites of passage involving rebellion,self-discovery and sex in various forms and approaches. There is the temptress Dilys, lurking seductively at the end of a Welsh branch line: the intellectual Jeremy, whose restless ideas conceal sexual ambiguities and inner anguish; and finally Nancy, the girl whom Robin meets at Oxford and whose life with him becomes the pivotal relationship of the novel. 'You Can't Do Both' is Amis as you know him - brilliantly funny, outrageous, and exact to every social nuance; but also as you've never known him before, writing with tenderness and compelling insight in a story which is strongly autobiographical. SWINSON, ARTHUR,LONDON.PETER DAVIES, 1964 for a UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn. [Peter Davies set up his own publishing company in 1926 with some financial help from J.M. Barrie who had befirended the brothers and informally adopted them.In 1937 William Heinemann Ltd took a majority interest in the firm of Peter Davies Ltd,and the two firms were closely linked for the next forty years. In 1977 Peter Davies Ltd was fully incorporated into Heinemann and ceased trading as that entity. That title now out-of-print by this publisher.]                        Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional, and particularly internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It really is an exceptional, exemplary copy for its cleanliness and brightness and lack of detracting faults.    On 13 April 1919,thousands of civilians gathered peacefully in Jallianwala Bagh,a walled garden in Amritsar. In the eyes of both the lieutenant governor of Punjab, Sir Michael O'Dwyer, and his top military man in the city, Brigadier General Dyer, such gatherings were proof that a second Indian mutiny was brewing in the province. Dyer decided to use the meeting to teach the natives a lesson. Blocking the main exit with armoured cars, he marched in with his men and commanded them to open fire without giving any order to disperse.                    In the murderous ten minutes that follwed, hundreds fell dead, and many more were wounded. According to legend Udham Singh was among the injured that day and, picking up a handful of blood-soaked earth,he vowed to take revenge on those responsible.More than twenty years later, in a Westminster hall,he gunned down O'Dwyer in cold blood to fulfil that promise. His actions made him a martyr in India and, to this day,his name is revered.             But what happened in the intervening years? In this sweeping narrative that takes the reader across four continents,Anita Anand separates reality from myth to reveal Singh' astonishing story. She brillaintly pieces together his movements and the people who inspired and helped him, discovering surprising new links that take us from Jazz Age New York to the shady world of international spy-rings,from poverty-stricken London bedsits to movie sets.'The Patient Assassin' shines a devastating light on one of the Raj's most horrific events, but reads like  taut thriller as Singh's moment of desting draws ever nearer.   Please contact seller, for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!         N.B. Ronni Ancona is fed up with football: the way it dominates TV, takes over men's brains and ruins relationships. So,for the sake of women everywhere,Ronni conducts an experiment to see if a man can be made to give up the very thing he claims he cannot live without. But who would agree to be Ronni's guinea pig? Surely not her ex-boyfriend,ALISTAIR McGOWAN, who has devoted much of his life to the game - from a childhood obsession with everything to do with Leeds United to an adult addiction to the Ceefax football pages (and a disturbing interest in attendances!)? Over the course of a year, using feminine guile, replacement techniques and endless rounds of toast and Marmite,Ronni systematically does all she can to distract her former boyfriend during these early months of withdrawal. But what actually happens when a man gives up the thing he loves the most? And after being 'clean' for the whole summer, will the lure of a new football season break his resolve? And is Ronni really capable of being 'systematic'? Part memoir of a football addict, part comedy self-help manual,'A Matter of Life and Death' is a brilliant,banter-fuelled book about the endlessly frustrating differences between men and women. Following the extraordinary success of his newly illustrated edition of 'The Wind in the Willows',artist Michael Hague now offers an equally stunning array of full colour paintings to infuse new life into his favourite Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales. Michael Hague chose these nine tales for their quality as stories."I did not choose these tales for their visual images,as might be expected of an illustrator," he said."Rather,I have selected each one because it means something special to me.They are my old friends.Paintings rolled off my drawing board in an effortless fashion. It was if I had been preparing them since childhood. It is my hope that these paintings are worthy of the stories themselves, and that they will entice children and grown-ups to read them.If they do,I believe they will find,as I have, that imagining and believing are the only forms of magic left in the world." Michael Hague,American artist, born Los Angeles, 1948.A foremost American illustrator, primarily of children's fantasy books.Early influences include turn-of-the-century illustrators Arthur Rackham,N. C. Wyeth, and Howard Pyle.He has established an international reputation as an illustrator of children's classics, notably the 'Wind in the Willows' (1980).Among the other books he has illustrated are classics such as 'The Wizard of Oz', 'The Hobbit' and the stories of Hans Christian Andersen.Known for the intricate and realistic detail he brings to his work, and the rich colours he uses in his illustrations and paintings. From journalistic accounts like 'Imperial Life in the Emerald City' to insider memoirs like 'Jawbreaker',the books about President George W. Bush's War on Terror,in Afghanistan and against Iraq, could fill a library. But each explores a slice of a whole: two wars launched by a single president as part of a single foreign policy. Now acclaimed historian Terry H. Anderson examines them together,in a single comprehensive overview. Shortly after the terrorist attacks of September 11,2001,President George W. Bush told advisor Karl Rove,"I am here for a reason, and this is how we re going to be judged." Anderson provides this judgement in this sweeping, authoritative account of Bush's War on Terror and his twin interventions. He begins with historical surveys of Iraq and Afghanistan known respectively as the "improbable country" and "the graveyard of empires",and he examines U.S. policies toward those and other nations in the Middle East from the 1970's to 2000.Then Anderson focuses on the Bush Administration, carrying us through such events as the terrorist's attacks of 9/11,the invasion of Afghanistan and the siege of Tora Bora, the "Axis of Evil" speech, the invasion of Iraq and capture of Baghdad, and the eruption of insurgency in Iraq.He ranges from RPGs slamming into Abrams tanks to cabinet meetings, vividly portraying both soldiers in the field and such policymakers as Dick Cheney and Condoleezza Rice.Anderson describes the counter-insurgency strategy embodied by the surge in Iraq, and the simultaneous revival of the Taliban. He concludes with an assessment of the prosecution of the wars in the first years of Barack Obama's presidency.Carefully researched and briskly narrated,'Bush's Wars' provides the single-volume,balanced history that we have been waiting for. Peter the Great seems to exemplify the completely autocratic ruler who, like certain Roman emperors, could in principle do exactly what he pleased with his inherited country.Yet he was subject to pressures of many kinds - social, political, economic, and even temperamental - which helped to shape his attitudes and to direct his actions.Though Peter is often made out to resemble a brilliant comet in European history,Professor Anderson is able to show that many innovations in the governing of Russia had begun before his time, and argues that Peter is best understood in the perspective of Russian history as a whole. This is the first English-language biography of Peter by an author in command of the great abundance of Russian materials, and it provides a thorough investigation into the domestic affairs of the country as well as a personal portrait of a highly gifted and enigmatic man. Peter's contributions to Russia's development are analysed in detail: his determination to westernize the country,to furnish it with the means of self-defence,to liberalize its religious and educational institutions,to give it a voice in international affairs,to create a new capital city of remarkable splendour. Professor Anderson also concentrates on another side of Peter's personality: the coarseness of his own behaviour, his frequent cruelty, his total lack of familial sentimentality. In assessing these two contradictory aspects of Peter the Great, the author shows his deep understanding of the problems which beset Russia at the dawn of the eighteenth century, and his unrivalled familiarity with the period.
