Visually the exterior appearance is acceptable for it's age and nature, i.e. an ephemeral paper item, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It is only the exterior faults/appearance described that prevent a higher grading. An interesting item to appeal to trade union and colonial historians alike. Takoradi Harbour is in the Western region of Ghana, located in the industrial district of Sekondi-Tokoradi and is the oldest harbour in Ghana. The Takoradi harbour and the Tema Harbour are the only harbours in Ghana. The idea for the construction of the port was first advocated in 1895 by consulting engineers of the British Government. The engineers proposed the harbour when constructed, could serve both as a terminal port for the Tarkwa railway project and aa a naval port to serve the British empire in war times. The site for the harbour was proposed at the Amanful village which sat in the bay of the harbour today. The construction of the port begun in 1921 by then governor of the Gold Coast,Sir Gordon Guggisberg and was completed in 1928. The Takoradi harbour is 230 kilometres from Accra, the capital of Ghana.Nowadays, the port receives and exports high volumes of cargo serving as the main export port for Ghana. It now also serves the international trade purposes of land locked countries in the Sahel region of Africa - some of the countries are include Mali,Burkina Faso and Niger, transitting large volumes of cargo for these countries. This is the ceremonial opening of same's official programme of that event. The Harbour declared officially opened by the Rt Hon. J.H. Thomas, P.C., L.L.D., M.P. He was later that day in the visit,to also inspect the Takoradi Railway Terminus, for which there was also an official commemorative book produced. James Henry Thomas [b. 3rd October,1874 – d. 21st January,1949] sometimes known as Jimmy Thomas or Jim Thomas, was a Welsh trade unionist and Labour (later National Labour) politician, elected to Parliament in 1910 as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Derby. He began work at twelve years of age, soon starting a career as a railway worker. He became an official of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants and in 1913 helped to organise its merger with two smaller trade unions on the railways to form the National Union of Railwaymen (NUM) - now part of the RMT. Thomas was elected NUR general secretary in 1916,a post he held until 1931.He was the general secretary during the successful national rail strike of 1919 that was jointly called by the NUR and ASLEF against proposed wage reductions. In 1921 Thomas played a leading role in the Black Friday crisis, in which rail and transport unions failed to come to the aid of the miners, who were facing wage reductions. Before the 1926 General Strike the TUC (Trades Union Congress) asked Thomas to negotiate with Stanley Baldwin's Conservative Government, but the talks were unsuccessful and the strike went ahead. He was appointed Secretary of State for the Colonies in the incoming Labour government of 1924 under Ramsay MacDonald. In the second Labour government of 1929 Thomas was made Lord Privy Seal with special responsibility for employment. He became Secretary of State for the Dominions in 1930 and retained that position in Ramsay MacDonald's National Government (1931–1935).As a result of joining the National Government he was expelled from the Labour Party and the NUR.For the first few months of the National Government in 1931 he also served as Colonial Secretary once more. One of the problems he had to cope with was the Australian cricket bodyline affair, which he said was one of the most difficult he faced. Thomas served as Secretary of State for the Colonies once more from 1935 until May 1936,when he was forced to resign from politics. It was revealed that he had been entertained by stock exchange speculators and had dropped heavy hints as to tax changes planned in the budget. For example, while playing golf,he shouted "Tee up!", which was taken as a suggestion that the duties on tea were to rise.[WiKi] Please contact seller, for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas customers - BEFORE ordering through the order page! ** N.B. Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It really is an exceptional, exemplary copy for its cleanliness and brightness. Never before have so many Anfield legends opened up so freely about their personal lives in print. In 'Liverpool Captains', R. Lund Ansnes meets many of the club's greatest figures; taking you beyond the walls of the training ground and into their homes, uncovering the human impact of leadership. The themes of identity, motivation, teamwork and loyalty are consistent but Ansnes analyses how the role of the captain has changed over the last 55 years since the appointment of Ron Yeats by Bill Shankly. Yeats, indeed, is one of her 16 interviewees and like Tommy Smith after him, Ansnes details the devastating effect of Alzheimer's Disease upon their lives. Ragnhild meets Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and other former captains such as Paul Ince whose story involves an improbable rise from abandoned child to captain of club and country. An author of two Liverpool books - 'Liverpool FC.' and 'Liverpool Hearts' both in 2010, she was also the Editor for the Norwegian translation of Bill Shankly's autobiography. Ansnes spent three years travelling across Europe getting to know the legends. The outcome is a revealing portrait of life at Anfield, showing sides of players you have never seen before. This edition is now out-of-print as the publisher ceased trading in the late 1980's.The company was bought by Thorsons in 1988,and therefore ceased publishing under that name. Thorsons was purchased by William Collins in 1989.William Collins became wholly owned by News Corporation in 1990,and was then incorporated into HarperCollins Publishers. The name of William Kimber has not been used for publishing since that, making all previously published titles by them,out-of-print,under that name.      The aircraft carrier has played a vital role in the war at sea during the sixty years of the Fleet Air Arm's existence. And of ll the ship's names, that of 'Ark Royal' is one of the best known. In all, there have been four Ark Royals, three of them aircraft carriers, and the last is still in commission (then 1976),though the end of her career is in sight. The first 'Ark Royal' was a 16thC galleon, the flagship of the Lord High Admiral of England,Lord Howard of Effingham, and fought in the Armada. The next 'Ark Royal' fought in a very different age; intended as a merchant ship, she was converted into a sea-plane carrier to serve at the Dardanelles and the Gallipoli landings.Renamed the 'Pegasus',she lived on to the Second World War as a fighter catapult ship. The third 'Ark Royal' was perhaps the best known and best loved of all ships in the second World War,taking part in some of its most stirring battles. She was sunk off Gibraltar having played a crucial part in the sinking of the 'Bismarck'.The fourth 'Ark Royal' was launched in 1950,and is facing the challenge of the future as new types of warships are developed. Michael Apps, formerly of the Fleet Air Arm,and author of 'Send her Victorious', traces the history and development of the four 'Ark Royals',with an emphasis on the outstanding actions they have fought in.This is a book for all interested in what is surely one of England's greatest and imperishable heritages - her naval history. Teen punk,self-taught musician, accidental grunge hero, bandleader, session man,A-list celebrity,smoker,drinker,lover,multi-millionaire - Dave Grohl has barely stopped for breath over the past 36 years. And Grohl has also achieved the rarest of feats, the rock and roll double crown, having been a key member of two hugely successful and influential bands: Nirvana and the Foo Fighters. Born and raised in suburban Virginia,in a one-parent household,Grohl didn't expect to rise above his humble beginnings.Having taught himself the drums in his bedroom by beating the stuffing out of his pillows with stolen matching sticks,Grohl learned his trade in the thriving Washington,D.C. hardcore scene, where he lied his way into the drummer's spot in anarchic late '80s outfit Scream.Over the next few years, his world consisted of living rough in squats, on friend's couches and inside cramped tour vans,as Scream forged their pioneer's path on the underground hardcore circuit. But a chance spotting by Chris Novoselic and Kurt Cobain resultred in Grohl, with his worldly possessions packed away in two cardboard boxes, relocating to Seattle and playing his key part in the short but era- defining career of grunge icons Nirvana. But that was just stage one of the musical life of Dave Grohl,as author Jeff Apter reveals. Throughout his time beating the hell out of his drums alongside Kurt Cobain and Chris Novoselic, Grohl had been writing and recording his own melodic spins on rock and roll.Although Grohl actually considered walking away from music after Kurt Cobain committed suicide, his solo project, the Foo Fighters, quickly took on a life of its own. The first comprehensive, illustrated biography of Dave Grohl from Nirvana and the Foo Fighters. Here is the unlikely story of one man's wild ride from his upbringing in a Virginian suburban outpost to the top of the rock and roll ladder. Throughout his now legendary career with punk banner-wavers Scream, grunge heroes Nirvana and alt-rock leaders the Foo Fighters,Dave Grohl has thrilled millions of fans with his powerhouse drumming, his anthemic riffing and his melodic brilliance - and the smile has never left his face. His is a story of hard times, good fortune and some very tough decisions.Three decades into his life of rock, having endured more than his fair share of tragedy and triumph,Dave Grohl remains one of rock's most respected figures. Some angling writers in the past have considered tench to be capricious, but in this book methods and techniques are described which dispel any such notion. With the right approach tench, and big ones too,can be caught regularly by anyone who is prepared to put in the necessary time and effort.Suitable big tench waters are described, and where in these waters the tench are likely to be found.Baits are discussed, and recipes given for successful 'boilies' and other 'specials'. The author also explains the important matter of bite detection best suited to various conditions, and there are exciting stories of large catches of big tench and, more importantly, why these successes were achieved. The author is a well known and respected angling writer and photographer, whose approach to angling has been influenced by five men: through Dick Walker's and Fred J.Taylor's writings, and by the friendship and guidance of Bob Buteux,Kevin Clifford and Bill Quinlan both on and off the bank. These influences have helped him achieve an enviable list of big fish, including one 9lb tench and eight over 8lb.The book is illustrated with photographs and explanatory drawings and diagrams. Anyone interested in big fish in general, or big tench in particular, cannot help but find helpful advice within these pages. Publisher ceased trading mid 1980's,so this edn is now out of print. Author's 5th collection of short stories. Ingeniously plotted, with richly drawn characters and deliciously unexpected conclusions, and with the added bonus of illustrations by the internationally acclaimed artist,Ronald Searle. While incarcerated for two years in five different prisons,Jeffrey Archer picked up several ideas for short stories. They range from a tale of 'The Man Who Robbed His Own Post Office' to the story of a company chairman who tried to poison his wife while on a trip to St Petersburg - both with unexpected consequences. In another,'Maestro' an Italian restauranteur ends up in jail, unable to explain to the tax man how he can afford a yacht,a Ferrari and a home in Florence, while only declaring a profit of £100,000 a year. 'The Red King' is a tale about a con man who discovers that an English Lord requires one more chess piece to complete a set that would be worth a fortune. In another tale of deception, 'The Commissioner',a Bombay con artist ends up in the morgue after he uses the police chief as bait in his latest scam. 'The Alibi' reveals how a convict manages to remove an old enemy while he's locked up in jail, and then set up two prison officers as his alibi. In total contrast is the accountant, who,in 'Charity Begins at Home',realizes he has achieved nothing in his life and sets out to make a fortune before he retires. And then there is Archer's favourite, which he came across after leaving prison,'In the Eye of the Beholder',where a handsome premier division footballer falls in love with a twenty-stone woman . . who just happens to be the ninth richest woman in Italy. Fred Archer's anecdotes, illustrated with over 50 of his own photographs and 8 pages of colour illustrations, bring to life this lost village of his childhood. The village has its cornerstones: the old doctor who goes on his rounds with his gun; the chapel elder with a gift for water-divining; the biblical old shepherd; the cowman who knows so much of life and is so content with it. There are also eccentrics: the artist who fires his muzzle-loader up into the apple tree every 5 November; Jasper Hill, the coalman, whose thrifty wife feeds him on pastry lard, and who shouts at the referee as he watches the village football team from the plum tree at the bottom of his garden; Ponto, who sleeps rough and is the butt of village practical jokers. Then, there are annual events, relished by all: sprout picking championships, village fetes, ploughing against a 'skinny wind from Russia',racing down the village street on home-made stilts or down the slope of Holcomb nap on the slippery summer grass on sledges made out of old cider barrels. Here, picturesque black and white thatched cottages are grim hovels for the thirty-shillings-a-week farm labourers; and old men remember ploughing with oxen and mowing with scythes while the Fordson tractor ousts the last generation of the great shire horses. In 'The Village of My Childhood' Fred Archer's descriptions, together with his contemporary photographs and the colour illustrations, create a highly nostalgic and evocative book, revealing the bygone life of a village, which will be of interest to all who love English rural life. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering its prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its qualifying compensation rates too! UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn thus.[True UK,8vo HB+ dw/dj,1st edn originally published 5 years earlier,by the same publisher,1994.] FINE/FINE. No owner inscrptn and no price-clip (£16.99) to dw/dj.Bright,crisp,clean,glossy laminated, black background with colour pictorial artwork,by Duncan Gutteridge, illustrated dw/dj,with gilt and white lettering; with negligible shelf-wear or creasing to edges and corners - no nicks or tears present.Top edges very lightly toned but still bright and clean,fore-edges less toned,so brighter and cleaner; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - pristine - no intentional dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, would appear unread - apart from my own collation.Bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,publisher's original plain black cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt letters to spine/backstrip and immaculate plain white endpapers.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn thus,3-323pp [paginated] includes 12 short stories; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages,a dedication, individual title separator page each with a b/w vignette illustration,b/w vignette illustrated 1st page of 2pp blanks and a further 2pp unillustrated blanks at the rear. Jeffrey Archer has been acclaimed as 'probably the greatest storyteller of our age' (Mail on Sunday) and 'a stroyteller in the class of Alexandre Dumas' (Washington Post).Of his stories the Sunday Express wrote: 'Jeffrey Archer brings to the short story all the sophisticated skills that have been the foundation of his success as a novelist.' This new collection surpasses either of its predecessors, and will enhance Jeffrey Archer's reputation further. In each of the stories, men and women are put under pressure - how do they react when they have an opportunity to seize,a crucial problem to solve,a danger to avoid? Archer plunges his readers twelve times into impeccably paced plots that will arrest them in the first paragraph and then keep them turning the pages as only he knows how.And for the first time in a Jeffrey Archer collection,we are offered in the final story a choice of endings - a device intriguing in itself and indicating the variety of directions in which a great storyteller can lead you down the wrong path. 'Twelve Red Herrings' is full of characteristically Archerian twists. But additionally, there is buried in each story a diversion of a kind - let us call it simply a red herring - which he challenges his readers to uncover. Will you be the first to spot all twelve? He was awarded the Kate Greenaway Medal (1956) for 'Tim All Alone' and the Carnegie Medal(1955) and Hans Christian Andersen Medal(1956) with 'The Little Bookroom'.He particularly enjoyed illustrating poetry. He worked mainly from memory, early developing a freely drawn and unmistakable style that changed very little during the course of his long career. He acknowledged the influence of Bernard Meninsky on his work, and also the 19thC draughtsmen Daumier,Dore and Caldecott. His brother-in-law Gabriel White considered 'perhaps no artist since Randolph Caldecott has captured so easily the qualities essential in successful illustration for a child.Ardizzone's are bold and clear and tell the tale in the simplest lines and colours.Ardizzone was awarded the CBE (UK honour) in 1971.In 1973, a retrospective of his work was held at the V & A Museum in London. FIVE AGAINST THE SEA: A true story of courage and survival.

Imprint: LONDON.VIKING,1990.
Edition: UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE/FINE.No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip to dw/dj.Blue paper-covered boards with white letters to spine/backstrip and b/w map eps.8vo,226pp includes 20 b/w photographs in 8pp. Adrift in the immensity of the Pacific Ocean, five fishermen from Costa Rica struggled against thirst, hunger and despair for an incredible 142 days, the longest such endurance on record. When finally rescued, the men had drifted 4,500 miles from their home shores, crossing four time-zones,and had survived on a diet of rainwater, fish and turtles. Here, journalist Ron Arias relates their courageous, tenacious battle with the implacable forces of nature. The men's ordeal began on 25 January 1988 when a sudden storm overtook the small fishing boat Cairo III. After spending many exhausting hours simply keeping the boat afloat, they then found themselves lost on the open ocean with no engine or radio, and with dwindling supplies of food and water. What followed was a nightmarish (and, in retrospect, intriguing) battle to stay alive in appalling circumstances, where their own frayed tempers threatened to undermine the co-operation that was vital. Arias has extensively interviewed all the participants in this miraculous story, not just the fishermen themselves but also their families in Costa Rica, who spent many heartbreaking days persuading the authorities to take up and then continue what at times seemed like a hopeless search. The result is an inspiring human story of perseverance, hope and inner strength. Per Ardua ad Astra. For 75 years this stirring phrase has epitomized the glorious traditions of the Royal Air Force. Created in 1918 from the former Royal Flying Corps, the RAF forged its own traditions as it developed thetactics and weaponry of aerial warfare. It ended the First World War with a strength of 300,000 personnel and 23,000 aircraft, but there was the immediate threat of stringent post -war defence budgets and an Army and Navy that demanded that air power be under their control. The RAF was perhaps the most neglected armed force during the 'appeasement years',despite vocal opposition and foreign militarization. After desperate rearmament in both aircraft and ground defences, and following tactical deployment, the RAF stemmed the tide of German expansion in the Battle of Britain. The author devotes 1/3rd of the book to the superb record of the RAF throughout WW2,acknowledging the problems in command, strategy and aircraft equipment that appeared in all theatres during the fight against the Axis forces.Chapters cover the lean years from 1940-1942 with the RAF over-committed on all fronts, through the gradual buld-up with improved aircraft and on to the heavy bombing campaign and the final, comprehensive air assault on Germany. The years 1944-45 mark the high point of RAF history, but the factual framework continues with details of the appearance of jet aircraft, the deployments worldwide as the British Empire evolved into the Commonwelth and the RAF's changing tactical and strategic roles as Britain declined from'superpower' status. This period also includes an appraisal of the V-bomber force, the slow decline in British research and development, the emergence of the RAF role in NATO and the balance of power during the Cold War. As an authentic record of the development of the Royal Air Force, this single volume represents an important historical review. It is sure to be valued by historians, enthusiasts, serving personnel and those with nothing more than a general interest in the history of our armed forces. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too! Powered ships are an important part of our daily life - although perhaps not everyone thinks of them in that way.Not only do they carry passengers and mail all over the globe, but they are the main means of transporting large quantities of raw materials. It is because of the efficiency of a highly complex network of shipping, that heavy industry can operate thousands of miles from the source of fuel' or that people everywhere can drink a cup of coffee for breakfast. How did this all come about? This new history is concerned only with the origins of powered ships, from which stemmed the revolution in travel and trade, for it is the early experiments that are the most fascinating part of the story. In 'The Begiinings',Richard Armstrong relates how the early pioneers of steam travel faced ignorance and prejudice with a kind of reforming determination.First came the inventors, foremost among them Thomas Newcomen and James Watt, who developed the 'first practicable steam engine'.Soon other men saw the possibilities of this new engine and John Fitch built a paddle steamer to run on the River Delaware as early as the 1790s. Experiments multiplied on both sides of the Atlantic, and Symington's Charlotte Dundas and later,Bell's Comet and Fulton's Clermont proved that the steam ship was no longer a wild theory. It was a practical reality. Within two decades steam ships were attempting the Atlantic crossing and their obvious advantages over sail encouraged further improvements in machinery and design. The author lucidly describes the main advances with the help of contemporary accounts and drawings, including details about such influential vessels as the Savannah, the Sirius and the Great Eastern. But the growing success of the steam ship also involved tragedy and disappointment; some ships exploded, others disappeared without trace; and even as late as the 1870s, innovations such as the use of iron or the screw propeller were regarded with deep suspicion by the Admiralty.By this time however, the powered ship's usefulness was undisputed and its enormous scope for development had begun to be realized. For more than a quarter of a century SWAPO - the South West African People's Organisation of soon to be independent Namibia - has been a political and military reality throughout much of southern Africa. Thousands of lives have been lost in a guerilla war that has never been adequately covered by the media.Few people - in Africa or elsewhere - are aware of the make-up of SWAPO as a political organisation; of the reason why the movement ultimately resorted to violence as a means of achieving change; or of the panoply of characters involved during the past three decades (then 1989). Andreas Shipanga's story,as told to Sue Armstrong, relates all this and more.He tells of the contract labour system which formed the basis of SWAPO demands for change; the first stirrings of political consciousness among the tribespeople; and the efforts of the South African security police in the early days to stifle opposition. This is a powerful, sad, but true story.Shipanga was a founder member of SWAPO in Cape Town in 1957.He returned to Windhoek as political organiser in 1963 and witnessed the reluctant birth of the armed struggle against South African occupation of Namibia. He was forced to flee the country when the revolutionary of which he was a member was discovered. In exile for 14 years,he became a roving ambassador for SWAPO based in Cairo before moving to headquarters in Lusaka.Soon he found himself a victim of the liberation movement through which he had hoped to achieve freedom. Shipanga's experiences - as a herdboy in a large Ovambo family,a teacher in northern Namibia,a contract fisherman in Cape Town, then as a freedom fighter who became a victim of ruthless power politics - encapsulates the full richness and complexity of the human drama in southern Africa. This is the first time the inside story of an African liberation movement has been told prior to independence. Many of Shipanga's anecdotes shed entirely new light on the liberation struggle. His revelations are an important contribution to the historic political debate in Namibia today.South-West Africa has been known internationally as Namibia since 1968,when the United Nations General Assembly changed the territory's name. This resulted in a protracted struggle between South Africa and forces fighting for independence, particularly after the formation of the South West Africa People's Organisation in 1960.The territory became the independent Republic of Namibia in 1990. [SWATF is an abbreviation for the South West African Territorial Force. It was the forerunner of the Namibian Defence Force and was basically an extension or auxiliary of the South African Defence Force to combat the SWAPO insurgency. It was formed on 1 August 1980 from Southwest Africans serving as personnel in SADF (South Africa Defence Force) units. It was part of the Department of Defence of SouthWest Africa. It was headed by an Administrator general who was always a SADF general. There was the SWATF/SADF Joint Committee for Planning,Liaison and Co-ordination. As a "joint" command the SWATF was responsible for logistics, finances and administration while the SADF was responsible for military operations.] Please contact seller, because of the lighter weight of this item, for correct, insured shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!

Despite that,it really is still an exemplary example for its cleanliness, brightness and lack of any other detracting faults associated with a decades old paperback. The 3rd book in the Frank Pagan series 'Jig' being the first.                                  On a bitter winter morning, during rush hour,a bomb explodes in a crowded train in the London underground.More than a hundred people are horrifically and senselessly slaughtered. In the absense of any terrorist claim come distressing unanswerable questions. Who planted the device? And why? A few hours later in a Mayfair flat a young prostitute is murdered and an enigmatic message written in blood is left in her room.It is addessed to Frank Pagan,counter-terrorist specialist, who has been shunted aside by the political infighting at Special Branch, but is now brought back from exile to investigate the most terrifying case of his career. Pagan, who moves in his own mysterious ways, who flaunts the rule-book and follows his own instincts,is plunged into a darkening puzzle more sinister than a bomb in an underground tunnel. He finds himself pitted against two old adversaries: the deranged terrorist Carlotta,a woman whose appetite for blood is matched only by Pagan's hunger for justice - and the ghost of Jig,his most famous antagonist, whose death has given birth to new demons.                       Campbell Armstrong (b. 25th February,1944, Glasgow –  d. 1st March,2013,Dublin).   Please contact seller, for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas customers - BEFORE ordering through the order page! Visually the exterior appearance is more than acceptable, and even internally, the book is in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It is only the exterior faults described that prevent a slightly higher grading.Despite them,it really is an exceptional copy for brightness and cleanliness. It is 1968,and Charles Somerville, son of impoverished land owner Philip Somerville,is on the run fromLondon drug dealers in the Welsh Borders. In nearby Lllantrisillio, newly arrived James and Suzie's sylvan idyll is suddenly and brutally shattered by the voyeuristic behaviour of their farming neighbour. Also in the Border country is Birmingham policeman,John Monroe, who is liaising with his Welsh colleagues on a routine inquiry. But when there is an unexplained death in the area,he finds himself inexorably drawn into the investigation . . . one which is to uncover a tangle of dangerous passions and tensions running beneath the calm rural scene. 'Less Than Kind' is a gripping story of psychological menace which offers a penetrating insight into the darkest recesses of the mind.A remarkable followup to author's acclaimed debut novel,'Night's Black Agents.' If Paris is the city of Love, then London is the city of Lust. For over a thousand years,England's capital has been associated with desire, avarice and the sins of the flesh.Richard of Devises,a monk writing in 1180,warned that 'every quarter [of the city] abounds in great obscenities'.As early as the second century AD,London was notorious for its raucous festivities and disorderly houses, and throughout the centuries the bawdy side of life has taken easy root and flourished. In the third book of her fascinating trilogy ['NECROPOLIS: London and Its Dead,' and 'BEDLAM: London and Its Mad.'],award-winning popular historian Catharine Arnold turns her gaze to the city's relationship with vice through the ages. From the bath houses and brothels of Roman Londinium,to the stews and Molly houses of the 17th and 18th centuries,London has always traded in the currency of sex. Whether pornographic publishers on Fleet Street,or fancy courtesans parading in Haymarket, its streets have long been witness to colourful sexual behaviour. In her trademark accessible and entertaining style,Catharine Arnold takes us on a journey through the fleshpots of London from earliest times to present day. Here are buxom strumpets, louche aristocrats, popinjay politicians and Victorian flagellants - all vying for their place in London's league of licentiousness. From sexual exuberance to moral panic, the city has seen the pendulum swing from Puritanism to hedonism and back again. With latter chapters looking at Victorian London and the sexual underground of the 20th century and beyond, this is a fascinating and vibrant chronicle of London at its most raw and ribald. Necropolis is a luminous, oddly beguiling account of how London has treated its dead, ranging from Roman burial rites to the horrors of the plague, from the founding of the great Victorian cemeteries to the more recent trends of collective grief and the cult of mourning, such as that surrounding the death of Princess Diana. Leaving no headstone unturned,Catherine Arnold unearths one of the great untold histories of the nation's capitol.Skillfully blending history, architecture, archaeology, and anecdote, she also explores phenomena like bodysnatching, public executions, and the rise of the undertaking trade. Ghoulishly entertaining and full of fascinating nuggets of information, Necropolis is destined to become a classic work on the city. B/w portrait photograph to upper wrap and a small colour portrait photograph to rear wrap; with gilt and black letters to upper wrap and black letters to spine/backstrip. Part imperious royal figure, part femme du monde,Princess Margaret remains (then 1997) the most interesting member of the British royal family. For many years second in line to the throne, she was born with every possible advantage - beauty, vivacity, intelligence, wealth and position. Yet her nature,as one intimate has put it, 'was to make everything go wrong'.She has been described as tragic, unresolved,a royal maverick,a woman of conflict,a princess without a cause. Her private life has been racked by scandal; it has been a catalogue of unhappy, unfulfilled and unsuitable relationships. Her many good points have been submerged in an avalanche of criticism.Dauntingly royal yet defiantly unorthodox,Princess Margaret has spent the greater part of her life torn between meeting standards of the monarchy and flouting its long-established conventions. Here is the first detailed, in-depth study of this controversial figure, written by a respected royal biographer.Theo Aronson is uniquely qualified to tell the Princess's story - from her private and public life.In the course of his writing career,he has interviewed, not only Princess Margaret herself, but also the Queen Mother,Prince Charles,Princess Alice,Duchess of Gloucester and Princess Alice,Countess of Athlone. He has also spoken to members of the various royal households. For this study he has been helped by many who knew the Princess and has drawn on several new and unfamiliar sources. The result is a fresh, frank and highly entertaining account of an always colourful life. Aronson's authoritative biography does justice to a complex woman - the first modern princess to lead her troubled private life in the glare of world publicity.
